When we protect our athletes, we protect Figure Skating.

A Figure Skating athlete

Skaters display elegance and grace while tirelessly traveling across the ice, delivering dance moves and jumps before an audience and judges. From waltz jumps and toe loops to the most difficult quadruple Axel, figure skaters reveal precision, finesse, and strength to deliver elements in their routines. Spending countless hours on and off the ice, figure skaters are masters of discipline, managing falls, and coping with high pressure. When we protect our figure skaters, we keep this sport safe and healthy for all.

Common Figure Skating Safeguarding Concerns

Abuse and misconduct can happen in all sports, at every level of play. Figure Skating has some specific vulnerabilities, such as:

  • Figure skating competition often involves subjective scoring, deducting from a baseline “perfect” score. Pressure and scrutiny to avoid point deductions can negatively impact self-esteem and confidence, and leave athletes emotionally vulnerable.
  • Figure skaters may place a high level of trust in their coaches. This can lead to psychological dependence and/or blurred boundaries in the coach-athlete relationship.
  • In figure skating, there can be pressure to have a certain body composition and to be physically small. Weight and size-related pressure and criticism can give coaches a high level of control over athletes, as well as potentially encourage eating disorders and low self-esteem.

What’s the difference between tough coaching & abuse?

The Coach Athlete Relationship Dynamics Diagrams below can be used as a gut check; consider the conduct you experience and observe in your sporting community, and discern whether what is occurring aligns with a caring and supportive coach-athlete relationship. For athletes who have unhealthy relationship dynamics with their coaches, inappropriate behavior can be subtle and difficult to discern. Awareness and prevention of these patterns of power and control help keep everyone safe.
